Whether it is families vacationing while kids are out of school, couples taking a long romantic weekend or retirees spending some time relaxing, the NC Outer Banks is a great place to go - and do not forget that the saltwater fishing, boating and golf courses in North Carolina are some of the best around. We have a map to show the ferry routes featured on this site. Click on the number icons for more information. Then, bookmark this page for the NC Ferry system schedule. The schedules shown on this site are deemed reliable, but you should always check with the NC DOT Ferry Division. NC Ferry ScheduleEach year, more than 2.5 million passengers ride the NC Ferry SystemSince the 1920's when Captain J.B.(Toby)Tillett started a tug and barge service at the NC Outer Banks Oregon Inlet, the residents and visitors of this part of North Carolina have relied on ferry service to get around. North Carolina Highway Commission recognized this fact in 1934 and began to subsidize Tillett's service. This helped residents and travelers afford the tolls. Then, in 1942 the NCHC began to fully reimburse Tillett so that the tolls were eliminated. Finally, in 1950, Tillett sold his business to the state and the modern NC Ferry system was born. Those few early NC Ferry routes have sprouted into seven (This web site currently only features 3 of the seven NC Ferry routes). Also, the tolls from the 2.5 million passengers are used to maintan a full service shipyard which support 24 ferries and many dredges, tugboats and barges.
